If you are traveling across America on Interstate 70 make plans to stop at Abilene, Kansas. A community of just over 6000 people that is filled with more things to see and do than can be done in two days.
There is something for everyone in Abilene Kansas. During the summer months volunteers get together and put on mock gun fights while telling the story of the old west in the original buildings that were used in the days of the trail drives. Before there was Dodge City, the cattle drives ended in Abilene, Kansas. it wasn't until the people of Abilene got tired of all the dust and rowdy cowboys that they chased them out and Dodge city became the center of the cattle drives.
If you like your railroad history there is a train ride you can take where they use an old steam engine rebuilt by volunteers and runs throughout the summer. Take time to enjoy a meal at the old Abilene town Cafe, or have a drink in the Abilene Saloon and watch the can can girls do there dance and song.
Maybe history of a different kind is what you prefer, There is the Presidential Library and Museum as well as the his boy hood home. Both Ike and Mamie are entomb on the grounds.The Museum is constantly being change and new things added. it is a favorite place for schools to bring whole class rooms to visit.
Maybe Racing is you thing, dog racing that is, The Headquarters for the National Greyhound Association is located in Abilene. The is also a Greyhound Hall of Fame and museum where there is always a greyhound present waiting to be petted. In April and October of each year greyhound dog owners bring their pups to race and get rated for racing. Then at the end of the mete there is a big sale.
Downtown Abilene has had a face lift and walking down NW 3rd Street will make you feel as if you are back in the 1800's. To go along with that there are two mansions built in the 1800's that are open to the public for viewing. There is also an 1800's building that has a restaurant which offers a fine selection of food.
There are many fine places to eat, one family style place is Mr K's Farm House, formally known as Lena's where President Eisenhower himself was paddles on his birthday when he ate there.
If you have the time go to the Railroad Depot and get a ride on the Abilene Trolley which will take you around the city and tell you all about the famous and infamous people and places.
If you are there in the month of August plan to attend the Central Kansas Free Fair. Take in the Rodeo, or the Demolition Derby, Watch Big combines Clash. also check out the local talent during the talent show.Arm Wrestling, as well as kids activities like the tractor pull.
For Christmas the City is in lights and trees as Buckeye Street and NW 3rd street are lined with Christmas trees and lights. There is the Christmas parade when Santa arrives and the mayor turns on the city lights.
Want to play golf? Abilene has two great Golf courses, One is a nine hole course on the edge of town and Just outside town is a links style 18 hole golf course. Both are reasonably priced and have cart rentals. Tee times on weekends are recommended. If not golf try bowling on the 12 lane bowling ally.
Accommodations are available with five motels and two offer indoor swimming pools, parking is available downtown within walking distance of most attractions.
